Screened Soil
Any soil reclaimed from the incoming waste streams is carefully screened to produce a reasonably fine and good-quality product. This includes any soil obtained via the Trommel process, which is subject to further screening in order to achieve the required particle size and texture.
The soil produced on site is subject to controls and testing by an independent agency and the findings of these will be supplied to any potential customer on demand.
The end-product is good free-draining material which finds its use as an ideal topsoil in general landscaping and land restoration. Results show that the soil is an alkaline sandy silt loam with a moderate stone content. The soil contains moderate to high levels of organic matter, phosphorous, potassium and magnesium, but is slightly deficient in nitrogen. To counteract this, it is recommended the soil is blended with compost material, which contains high levels of nitrogen. We currently have about 8,000 Tonnes of top soil available on site and are expecting this figure to rise quite considerably as a result of the Trommel operation.
Wood Chippings
Any clean, untreated and non-contaminated wood reclaimed from the incoming waste streams is stored until sufficient quantities are available for chipping using a wood shredder. This is done within the context of a joint venture with another Company. The size and quality of the product attained from this process is ideal for use in general landscaping.
Wood chippings furthermore provide an excellent and very coveted source of renewable energy and a large proportion of the wood chippings produced at Chilton Waste Services are currently supplied to Slough Power Station for this purpose.
Hardcore
Reclaimed hardcore from the recycling process is crushed to form a product with the specification of 6F5. This is a good, sound product, ideal for use in the construction trade, in particular for the purpose of foundation work and roadways.
All recyclable materials are sold to the customer at a considerable price advantage over and above the cost of the primary materials. In this way it is hoped that the customer will be encouraged to use recyclable products as opposed to primary materials. This not only reduces the onus on primary resources, but it also makes a positive contribution in helping the UK to meet its targets as defined in the EU Directive.
